This year’s race to the top of supervillainy has two more nominees: Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg and disgraced Cambridge Analytica CEO Alexander Nix.
2018 is the first year that the Pol Pot Plaque, considered by many to be a “Nobel Prize for mass chaos and destruction,” may be given to the leader of a major technology company. Prior recipients have included luminaries such as Saddam Hussein, Kim Jong Un, and John “the Mad Mustache” Bolton.
Despite the nefarious nature of the award, Mr. Zuckerberg was pleasantly surprised to learn about his nomination when The Plebeian interviewed him at his public relations bunker earlier this week. “I’m tremendously grateful I am being recognized for all the work I am doing to transform how humanity communicates,” he replied. “From ruining friendships over arcane politics to collapsing the public’s faith in data integrity, I’m honored to be the standard-bearer for gratuitously inept assholes all over the world.”
Mr. Nix declined to comment for this article, instead offering our reporter his pick of prostitutes in exchange for helping topple the U.S. government.
While some players, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, have applauded the entry of technology companies into the supervillain sector, other observers claim the Pol Pot Plaque Awards Committee had “sold itself out” for a chance to join the “Silicon Valley bro culture.”
One article in feminist outlet Jezebel decried the lack of diversity in the new nominee pool: “Once again, the committee’s picks are too white, too male, and too straight to adequately represent the diverse experiences of all evil people.”
For now, however, Mark Zuckerberg appears to be the leading contender, with betting markets placing 3-1 odds on his receipt of the award sometime in mid-October. “I have no doubt he is going to win,” says compulsive white-collar gambler Harry Goldman. “Zuckerberg has made Facebook into an addiction. Even with this data breach stuff, I just can’t help getting a little dopamine hit every time my mistress likes one of my pics with the boys.”
